Perioral Dermatitis

What is Perioral Dermatitis?

Perioral dermatitis is a common skin condition that primarily affects the area around the mouth, although it can also appear around the nose and eyes. It is characterized by small, red bumps or pustules, often accompanied by dryness, scaling, and itching. The exact cause of perioral dermatitis is unknown, but several factors have been identified as possible triggers. These include the use of topical steroids, irritating cosmetics, overuse of active ingredients, hormonal changes, and stress.

How can it be managed?

Managing perioral dermatitis requires a holistic approach that includes identifying and addressing underlying triggers, avoiding irritants, and adopting a suitable skincare routine focusing on repairing the skin barrier. Exploring lifestyle factors that contribute to inflammation, such as ensuring quality sleep, minimizing inflammatory food intake, and managing stress levels, is also important. Cortisol, the stress hormone, is known to drive inflammation. While medical intervention may be necessary in some cases, it should not replace a quality skincare routine.

Maintaining a gentle skincare routine and focusing on rebuilding the skin barrier is crucial to managing this condition.
